Expression of E-cadherin in breast carcinoma

Abstract
Breast carcinoma is common malignant tumor in female of the Korea. Many oncogens have been found in malignant tumor cells. E-cadherin located in cell membrane is important for progression and metastasis of tumor. To evaluate the expression of e-cadherin according to histopathologic features and the relation between E-cadherin and prognosis in breast carcinoma, we have performed immunohistochemical staining, using mouse HECD-1 for 65 cases of breast carcinoma.
The results were as follows;
1)Breast cacinoma showed loss or marked reduction of the expression of E-cadherin in 41 cases(61.1%) of 65 cases.
2)According to types of breast carcinoma, infiltrating lobular carcinoma, papillary carcinoma, and medullary carcinoma showed higher rates of the loss or marked reduction of the expression of E-cadherin than infiltrating ductal and intraductal carcinoma.
3)According to the location of breast carcinoma, carcinoma developed in right side showed higher rates of the loss or marked reduction of the expression of E-cadherin than left.
4)According to grading of breast carcinoma, cases showing the loss or marked reduction of the expression of E-cadherin was grade I 66.7%, grade II 55.2%, grade III 77.8%.
5)According to absence or presence of lymph node metastasis cases showing the loss or marked reduction of the expression of E-cadherin was 72.4% in non-metastatic cases and 45% in metastatic cases.
Above results indicated that the loss or marked reduction of the expression of E-cadherin in breast carcinoma was not related to prognosis of the patients.
